Sikkim Overview

Sikkim State is established on May 16, 1975 and the capital of Sikkim is Gangtok. Total area of Sikkim is 7,096 km² including 7,058 km² rural area and 38 km² urban area. English, Nepali, Sikkimese and Lepcha are the official language of Sikkim, which is spoken by the majority of the population. As per ISO 3166-2:IN standard, The ISO code of Sikkim is IN-SK.

Sikkim State is further divided in to districts for administrative purposes. North is the largest district of Sikkim which covers area of 4226 km² while South is the smallest district of Sikkim which covers area of 750 km². East is the most populated whereas North is the least populous district in Sikkim State.

As of the 2011 census, Sikkim has a population of approximately 610,577 peoples which is divided into urban population of 153,578 and rular population of 456,999. The population density in Sikkim region is about 86 persons per square kilometer.
