Meghalaya Overview


Meghalaya State is established on January 21, 1972 and the capital of Meghalaya is Shillong. Total area of Meghalaya is 22,429 km² including 22,146 km² rural area and 283 km² urban area. English is the official language of Meghalaya, which is spoken by the majority of the population. As per ISO 3166-2:IN standard, The ISO code of Meghalaya is IN-ML.

Meghalaya State is further divided in to districts for administrative purposes. West Khasi Hills is the largest district of Meghalaya which covers area of 5247 km² while South Garo Hills is the smallest district of Meghalaya which covers area of 1887 km². East Khasi Hills is the most populated whereas South Garo Hills is the least populous district in Meghalaya State.
